Expectations play a great part in today’s world of movies. Having said that, this week’s major release “Kaminey” a film starring Shahid Kapur, Priyanka Chopra and Amole Gupte was quite high on anticipation level. This Vishal Bhardwaj directed film comes out at a time when the whole nation is scared of the SwineFlu. But as it is said... The show must go on....

A little about Vishal Bhardwaj- This 49 year old director is also a successful music director, singer and writer. He has successfully composed music for films like U, Me aur Hum, No Smoking, Nishabd, Omkara, Maqbool, Makdee, Hu Tu Tu, Chachi 420, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, Satya, Betaabi, Maachis, etc. and also his latest film Kaminey.

He has been highly influenced by literature and most of directorial films are based on some novels, which include Omkara based on Shakespears Othelo, The Blue Umbrella based on Ruskin Bond’s story, Maqbool based on Shakespears Macbeth.

He has a bonding with Oscar winner Gulzar who also gave him his break with the music of Machis, which was a huge critical success. Since then Gulzar has always called in Vishal Bhardwaj for the music of his directorial ventures and Gulzar has penned lyrics for all films directed by Vishal.

Vishal Bhardwaj has established himself as a name which has a cult following with films like Omkara, Maqbool, Makdee and The Blue Umbrella.

Moving on to the producers, they are the people who started the process of making Indian Film Industry an organized industry. UTV Movies has in the past given films like Delhi 6, Rang De Basanti, Swades, Jodha Akbar to name a few. They believe in quality cinema.

Shahid Kapur has been a star all throughout his 6 year long career making his debut in 2003 with moderately successful Ishq Vishq and following it with acclaimed performances in films like Fida (2004) and Shikhar (2005). He also got super successful films in form of Vivah (2006), Jab We Met (2007), Kismet Konnection (2008).

Priyanka Chopra after giving six consecutive flops got back to her peak with two successful films in the form of Dostana and Fashion.

One of my friends asked me why the big hype around this new film Kaminey is being created. I think the above discussion answers that question. Moving on to the expectations, nothing to say after all that discussed above.

Story/Screenplay- The film is written by Vishal Bhardwaj himself. Like all his films he has made sure that the story and script doesn’t disappoint and guess what... he’s successful in that. The film has one of the best ending of all time. There are not many moments in the film when you say that the film is boring. But, the only thing I would like to add her is that Kaminey has a story which can’t be guessed, you need to watch it from start to end to get to the real story. Excellent!

Acting- Shahid Kapur has given his career best performance in the film playing two roles which are poles apart. Incredible! Priyanka Chopra has done superb, acted really well and this performance is one of her best. Amole Gupte is a surprise package. He is too good. For people who don’t know who he is... He is the writer and creative director of Taare Zameen Par. Yes, he actually worked for about 8 years on the subject of Taare Zameen Par. Rest cast is damn good and like all Vishal Bhardwaj films, the characters have performed roles brilliantly.

Music: The music of the film is already a rage. Dhan Te Nan will definitely rule the league of party anthems around the country. Other songs like Pehli Baar Mohabbat, Raat Ke Dhai Baje, Kaminey are all first class and this album is one of the best of 2009. Background music has been used brilliantly. Fantastic!

Direction- What to say about direction when you have somebody who has a 100% record of brilliant direction. Direction is simply top notch. Loved the way the climax has been shot. Although, I found flaws in few scenes but they can be covered with other great ones. I would also like to add that Vishal has guts to attempt something like this. I think Noir is back and this film hits the list with top spot and Vishal Bhardwaj has proved once again that he is the king of his own league which is quite huge.

Final Verdict: Film Maft Hai, Action Maft Hai, Music Maft hai, Direction Maft hai, Acting Maft hai.

Story/Script: ****

Acting: ****

Music: ****1/2

Direction: ****1/2

Overall: ****1/2 (Outstanding)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

My BoxOffice Verdict (Estimate): Semi Hit/ Hit

Films like Kaminey are not made every day. It is not the normal commercial flick; it is a film which has art work and entertainment in one. If Omkara lacked the commercial touch, Kaminey fulfills that.

Recommended for people who wish to watch something different and dark.

P.S. Like always I have not disclosed the story instead thought of sharing some information about people associated with the film. Hope you enjoy the film.

  2. Gr8 review! Can't wait to see the flick, I'm going tonight! IMO Johnny Gaddaar is India's best crime/pulp caper, and I really hope Kaminey surpasses my expectations.
Once again, wonderful review, and keep it going!

  4. You have done more than good with the review. Can't but agree. However it would be good to share that the camera work is a bit exaggerated...too shakey. Already Shahid's dialogues were a complex idea, kudos to Shahid and Vishal, but blurring the camera when people are giving their best expressions and emotions is not justice done to the actors. All said Vishal is morden worlds answer to Shakespear. Just going back in time I am a great fan of Amitabh...the only time there used to be a blurr in the movie is when he is loosing focus of his vision/eyes.
