Movie Review: 3 Idiots

Aamir Khan has slowly and steadily beaten all his competition over the last two yearsRajkumar Hirani has made two highly successful & acclaimed films in the last five yearsChetan Bhagat’s debut novel getting filmed on such a huge canvas… These were the reasons which made 3 Idiots the most awaited film of the year...

And when the film was first announced, I had just two major concerns;

First, how would Aamir Khan play the role of 20 year old boy?

Second, which out of the two aspects would be seen in the film - Hirani’s direction or Aamir’s perfection?

Hirani in his previous works has made films with over the top simplicity whereas Aamir in his recent films has worked on minute details and has always craved for perfection.

Having said that, I must say Aamir certainly looks like a 20 year old guy. Infact, I was amazed by the way he has gone on to look so young. A 44 year actor playing a role of 20 that too with such brilliance is something no one else can ever do from the current breed of actors.

Now talking about the second concern, I wouldn’t call 3 Idiots an Aamir Khan film because this film is a piece of utter flaws (which is not synonym to Aamir films) and has scenes which might not be reality but you still love them due to their simplicity (Trademark Hirani).

So you see Aamir as the actor more in this film and the Direction is left to one of the best in the business today. In the times when film makers are copying the west or making films for the western audiences, he has sticked to the old age formula and intelligently made films, be it Munnabhai MBBS or Lage Raho Munna Bhai or 3 Idiots.

Moving on the story of the film, 3 Idiots is based on the best Indian English Novelist Chetan Bhagat’s debut novel “Five Point Someone” but it has been intelligently twisted by Rajkumar Hirani & Abhijat Joshi. The film begins at the Airport and goes on to a journey where the two friends (Raju & Farhan) along with an old mate (Chatur) go on to find their third friend (Rancho) who had changed their lives forever when they were in trouble. During this journey, they crash into a funeral, a wedding & whatnot. While on this journey, Farhan takes us to another journey around the memory lane which begins with their lives in Imperial College of Engineering where they face reality & were challenged by many intellectually correct people like Chatur & Virus. So, basically it is about how Rancho teaches them to follow their dreams and do whatever they wish to but with excellence.

I think the story of the film is the biggest strength and has been beautifully scripted. Look out for the ragging scene, the boy committing suicide, machine definition scene, well trained not well educated scene, drunken scenes, teachers day speech, etc, all these scenes keeps you entertained throughout.

Aamir Khan as I mentioned above has really evolved in the last decade and he has given one of the best performance of his career in 3 Idiots. Watch the college scene where Boman takes Aamir to the classroom and tells him to teach. He looks amazingly young (trust me I had goose bumps seeing a man almost 2.5 times elder to me looking younger than me)… He has looked at his emotional best in hospital scenes and comical best in his college scenes. So, overall I can call it an outstanding performance from the Ace.

Kareena Kapoor looks astonishingly beautiful, I am in love with her look after all those skinny roles she has been doing. Acting wise, she has given a superb performance in whatever role she had. Sharman Joshi is a very talented actor and he proves it yet again with a terrific performance. R Madhavan is one actor who has a niche following in Hindi film lovers but still is seen so less, although, whatever he does work wonders and he has exactly done it this time too. Boman Irani, what to say about this man, he is surely the underdog in the film, his acting, his dialogue delivery, his body language is exceptional. It is one of his best performances and I really expect a few awards for this performance of his.

The new guys Omi (Chatur) and the younger one who plays millimeter have done a commendable job. Omi is the debut of the year, Brilliant. For people who may not know, Omi Vaidya is an American actor & director.

Music by Shantanu Moitra is soothing and easy on ear. I have been reading a lot of reviews but was really shocked why the song Jaane Nahin Deinge is being left out of the best list. The song is one of the best this year with some excellent words in it. Others songs like Aal Izz Well (Masti), Zoobie Doobie (Fun), Give Me Some Sunshine (Enlightening), Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh (Soulful) make the music of 3 Idiots a complete package. I wasn’t a big fan of Shantanu Moitra before 3 Idiots but can be counted now.

Direction by Rajkumar Hirani is simple yet loving. 3 Idiots is definitely his biggest film out of the three and he has done his job with brilliance. The delivery scene is something which I feel is out of reality but then a film is a film, it may not be something real but it is the ability of the director which makes a fake scene look real and Hirani succeeds at it. It’s his ability that first he gave us a Jhaddu Ki Jhappi, and then he gave us Ghandhigiri and finally Aal Izz Well goes on to build a rapport which is not seen in today's time. Trust me, I have started saying Aal Izz Well whenever I am in trouble or little demotivated. Can't write

Overall, I can say the film is certainly the best film I have ever seen. A film with a lot of entertainment is a good film. A film with a message is a great film. 3 Idiots is a combination of both which makes me call it a classic.

Yes, 3 Idiots is a classic.

My Rating: ***** (Excellent)

P.S. I am a little biased over this film so have completely ignored all the flaws involved. The rating may decrease with time, but, certainly nobody should miss it. It is the first time I have seen a film getting such great reviews along with huge collections.

3 Idiots is all set to become the biggest Indian grosser of all time surpassing all Bollywood films. Don’t Miss It!

Would love to know your views on 3 Idiots, add up in comments....

Movie Review : Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani releases tomorrow. The Raj Kumar Santoshi directed film is produced by Tips and stars Ranbir Kapoor & Katrina Kaif. The Music is given by Pritam. In the blog poll which I did, more than 60% people voted for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani as there pick out of the two releases this week.

Expectations: The last time RajKumar Santoshi made a comedy was 1993 film Andaz Apna Apna which is a cult today. And, when he is returning to same genre after 16 years and that too with a little romance, you tend to expect a lot. Plus you also have Ranbir & Katrina as a bonus. Ranbir is in great form after the wonderful performance in Wake Up Sid. Music is so popular which also adds value to the anticipation. So, the expectations are huge.

Story/Script: The story is about a person called Prem who is the President of the local Happy Club and his only job is to make people smile and for that he keeps on helping others. Enters a girl “Jennifer” who he falls in love with, here starts the journey of this Prem who has a ghazab Kahani. The story of the film is outstanding and suits the genre of this film. The 1st half is so strong that you literally would die laughing. I saw people laughing even when RK was crying because that’s the feel of the film. The second half somewhere takes a down turn and the quality decreases. But, nevertheless the film picks up again and has a beautiful ending. Very Good

Acting: Ranbir Kapoor is the going to be the greatest actor in India.

This won’t be an understatement after you watch this film. His last film was Wake Up Sid where his played a serious character of an unmotivated youth, which he played with perfection and now in his next film he has played an extremely funny character which matches the standards set by the greatest comic actors of the world. He is outstanding and deserves a lot of awards for this performance. Katrina Kaif is good but I feel she looks too healthy in this film. There chemistry is outstanding and I think they should do many more films together in the future. Upen Patel is irritating in the special appearance which he makes. All friends of Ranbir Kapoor are good and act their roles well. Darshan Jariwala has done a commendable job and his expressions are really good. Rest all are fine, overall the acting dept. is Excellent

Music: One after another, Pritam has given hit albums this year and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani should top that list. The whole album is a HIT. Not even a single song is dull. 2 songs by Atif Aslam, that’s double bumper for all Atif fans like me. Other songs like Main Tera, Meri Tamanna, Prem Ki Naiyya, etc are all very good. But, I am disappointed by the way they have been used in the film. Outstanding

Direction: When I read that Rajkumar Santoshi has been the highest paid director of his time, I don’t take it as a joke because he really deserves that.

He has made some highly successful and critical acclaimed movies in the recent past and follows it beautifully with this romantic comedy. The direction is superb, way ahead of other comedy directors of India. He has tried to create something on the lines of Charlie Chaplin & Mr Beans and that too without making it a copy. There aren’t any major flaws (considering it to be a mad comedy) in the film but I didn’t like the way the songs were used in the film. The music had a lot more potential which I feel is underutilized in the film. Anyways, he has done a commendable job and I wish he makes 1 comedy every year so that people get genuine happiness rather than watching the otherwise useless comedies. Very Good

Overall, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is a winner and should join the league of Andaz Apna Apna, Golmaal & Hera Pheri. It is clean, hilarious and melodic which makes it a classic. Enjoy its silliness and watch Ranbir Kapoor giving an award worthy performance which may emerge as his First Big Hit.

Rating: **** (Very Good)

Script/Story: ***1/2

Acting: ****1/4

Music: ****1/4

Direction: ****

At the box office, it should take a big start and may emerge a winner.

Box Office (Estimate): Hit/ Super Hit

Recommended for families, friends and everybody who can leave their brains home.

Movie Review: Aladin

The second release this week is Sujoy Ghosh’s Aladin starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Ritesh Deshmukh and introducing Ex Miss Sri Lankan Jacqueline Fernandez. This fantasy film has been in the making for about 2 years and is based on the classic fairy tale “Aladin & the Magical Lamp” and boasts of visual effects never seen before on Indian screens.

About the director: Sujoy Ghosh is an actor, director and a writer. He played small roles in Rahul Bose’s Everybody Says I’m Fine (2001), My Brother…Nikhil (2005), Bluffmaster (2005) and Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007). He wrote & directed Jhankaar Beats (2003) & Home Delivery (2005) before moving on to directing Aladin (2009). Jhankaar Beats was entertaining and received good response. Home Delivery was a critical & commercial flop. With Aladin, Sujoy Ghosh also debuts as a producer.

Expectations: I have always loved fantasy films but unfortunately Bollywood has never made a world class Fantasy film. Hence, after reading about the visual scale, the interesting idea, the huge star cast I expected a lot from this film but after seeing the track record of the director I was a little confused. And, somehow I also feel the hype required for the film wasn’t created but on the other hand it could possibly be the best fantasy film of Bollywood if made properly. Huge

Doesn’t that sound interesting? Let’s find out what exactly is delivered.

Script/Story:
The story is written by Sujoy Ghosh who has also penned the screenplay along with Suresh Nair & Ritesh Shah. Story begins in a fairytale land “Khwaish” where Aladin, the looser lives. He has no one in his life, enters Jasmine who he starts liking, enters Genius who wants Aladin to ask for any three wishes so that he can be free from the contract of the Magical Lamp and in between all this enters the Ring Master who wants the lamp so that he can conquer the whole world. The first 20 minutes are excellent and the film looks promising but from there on, it looks strictly average. I believe the idea was luminous but the screenplay didn’t compliment it well. To be honest, I feel the whole film could have been shown in 90 minutes instead of dragging it to 121 minutes. Or if they wanted to make it a 120 minutes film they could have kept the entertainment level the same as in the beginning. Also, adding soo many songs made a tiring affair. Like many other films this year, Aladin also has a nice concept but wasted due to the screenplay. Average

Acting: Amitabh Bachchan has done a lot of action in this film after a long time and he still rocks and he has also acted well although he seemed to overact in a few scenes. I love to see Amitabh Bachchan in such roles rather than playing father to other actors. Roles like Aladin & Bhootnath are good for him at this age. Ritesh Deshmukh is top notch and has done his work with complete perfection by keeping it as simple as possible and this film can be counted as one of his best. Sanjay Dutt was still fresh in my mind after his wonderful performance in All The Best and I was expecting him to do wonders with this one but he was strictly average although I feel he had a huge scope which possible the director didn’t use properly. Jacqueline Fernandez is beautiful but has little scope in the film. Rest of the cast has done well but I feel they were underused. Good

Music: Although, I would strongly criticize the use of soo many songs in the film but somewhere from inside I also loved watching them on screen due to their great presentation & lavish sets. I heard songs of Aladin about a month ago when they were released and it didn't appeal to me than but as a measure I listen to all the songs of the film one day before the release which helps in creating a hype so I heard the songs on Thursday. After hearing them again and watching the videos on big screen, I liked a couple of songs which are You May Be & Tak Dhina Dhin. Rest all songs are fine and but overall Vishal Shekar disappoints as they have returned after about 1 year and still delivered average stuff. Average

Direction: Finally, I can say somebody has guts to make a fantasy film the way it should be made and in accordance with the requirements of the audience. The director has great vision which you can realize within just 5 minutes. The whole feel of the film is supreme and never seen before in India movies. Apart from minor flaws which can be ignored, the director has done a great job but how I wish he also wrote the screenplay better. It is really difficult to make clean films these days and he succeeded in it. Nevertheless, a better attempt than his previous films but I think he has played a big gamble by making this film so early in his career because fantasy films have not had a nice record in India. Very Good

Overall, Aladin is the cleanest film in recent times and the best fantasy film ever produced in Bollywood although it lacks a solid screenplay but scores on the great visuals & stellar vision of the director. Watch it once to celebrate the advancement of Bollywood.

Rating: *** (Good)

Script/Story: **1/2
Acting: ***
Music: **1/2
Direction: ****

At the box office, it may not work due to the genre which it falls into and also the very dull opening it has got on the first two days but it should be a success later on the Home Video circuit.

Box Office (Estimate): Disaster/Flop

Recommended for Families and Children.

Movie Review: London Dreams

This Friday sees the release of London Dreams directed & produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah starring Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Asin Thottumkal, Ranvijay, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Om Puri, and Brinda Parekh. This is Salman Khan’s third film in last 2 months after immensely successful Wanted and disaster Main aur Mrs Khanna, Ajay Devgn’s second film this month after All The Best and Asin’s second release after her debut last year.

He began his film career with a Thriller called Aankhen (2002), followed it with a highly emotional film Waqt (2005) and took it to next level by making Namastey London (2007) which was a Romantic. The person I am talking about is Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Besides producing all his directorial ventures, he has also produced a comedy Singh Is Kinng which became a Super Hit. His production company is called Blockbuster Movie Entertainers and yes they do deliver blockbusters.

Expectations: London Dreams was to be made a decade ago by Rajkumar Santoshi and the star cast was to be Shahrukh Khan & Aamir Khan, then there were rumors that Abhishek Bachchan & Hrithik Roshan would star in the film. But these couldn’t materialize and finally the movie went to Vipul Shah who made a lot of changes in the script and casted Salman Khan & Ajay Devgn who are coming together after a decade. There last & only outing together was in Hum Dil Chuke Sanam in 1999.

When you have such great history behind the making itself, you would expect it to be written in history as a master piece. Moreover, names like Vipul Shah, Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn increase the anticipation level and make it massive. The music is another USP for this film which I am in love with.

Script/Story: The story is about two friends who are complete opposites but are still attached to each other and music is what they have in common. This takes them to fulfill a dream, a London Dream. Definitely, the story of this film is one of the best this year, the fact that two hero films are not being made these days especially after the success of Multi starrers also makes this film a memorable ride because this film gives equal footage to both the lead actors.

But, the writing has a lot of flaws. Although the film begins with a bang with intense & dramatic moments going hand in hand with romantic & comical moments but somewhere dragged in the second half where it became a little silly and slow. I think the script lacks the nourishment because scenes like the outburst of Ajay Devgn could have been written more effectively which I think is the most crucial segment in the film. Average

Acting: Salman Khan gave one of his best performance this year with Wanted and followed it with a dull one in Main Aur Mrs Khanna but now again has given something which nobody has ever seen before. I haven’t seen much of the 90’s Salman but can certainly say that this is his best work if we talk about this decade. He makes you cry, he makes you laugh and he makes you feel the pain that the character goes through with ease. I don’t have words to describe what this film has done to me as a small time Salman Khan fan. I am a bigger fan of this Khan now.

The second lead Ajay Devgn is a two time national award winner and this performance adds value to those acclaims that he has been getting since last so many years. He plays an intense character and has performed them with great sensibility. Although, he could have done better in the second half but nevertheless has given an outstanding performance. Asin has done well to the limited screen space she has got. Aditya Roy Kapoor has done a commendable job, while Ranvijay has disappointed. He looks too crude in this film. Others are fine. Very Good

Music: The music of London Dreams has been on my playlist since last two weeks and I love Khanabadosh, Khwab Jo, Yaari Bina, Jashn Hai Jeet Ka, and Tapkey Masti which means I love almost all the songs. This album is certainly one of the best this year and is way ahead of its time which is the reason why people aren’t so found of the music. It adds value to the goodwill of the music composers Shankar Ehsaan Loy who earlier enjoyed success with albums like Wake Up Sid, Rock On, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Taare Zameen Par just to name a few. Background music by Salim Suleman is soulful and fits in well. Brilliant

Direction: Kudos to this great filmmaker for choosing such diverse topics in every film. The director has an eye for visuals which is evident from the cinematography which is top notch and visual effects which are fantastic and show that the Indian Film Industry is growing. The direction is good and he has created great moments which anybody can enjoy. The best scene is when Media is rude with the band and Salman Khan outbursts. Salman Khan acts so well that this scene makes you numb for a minute because of the way it is shot. the director has created such dramatic & intense musical which is the best in recent times. But the direction also has many flaws, one of them being the lip syncing of the songs. This film is a musical and the actors have not lip synced the songs properly. It is the work of a director to take care of such mistakes which look small when made but are major flaws when released which makes you realize later on that if a few steps would have been taken before, it could have been a better deal. Good

Overall, the film is an intense musical which has a lot of merits in the form of performances, music, story, cinematography and a good direction. This is indeed a Blockbuster material which should be a good watch this extended weekend. A special mention for Salman Khan who has given a monumental performance.

Rating: ***1/2 (Good)

Story/Script: ***

Acting: ****

Music: ****

Direction: ***

At box office, it should emerge a winner (Hit) but considering the dull opening, huge costs and immense competition from Aladin, Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani & Jail, it should atleast emerge an earner (Average).

Box Office Verdict: Average/Hit

Recommended for Salman Khan fans & intense film lovers. Not recommended for masala film lovers.

Movie Review: Main Aur Mrs Khanna

A few days ago, I read an article about new filmmakers in India. Names like Anurag Kashyap, Abbas Tyrewala, Ayan Mukherjee, Tarun Mansukhani, Kabir Khan, Imtiaz Ali, Sabbir Khan, etc., featured in that article. Two more names Prem Soni & Anthony D’Souza were also highlighted; both are debuting with their respective films this Friday.

I am talking about the second release this week which is Main Aur Mrs. Khanna starring Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sohail Khan & others. Main Aur Mrs Khanna is joint production between “Sohail Khan Production” & “UTV Spotboy Pictures” and is directed by Prem Soni.

Expectations: When you have Salman Khan in a film, you tend to expect something and when he is in full form after a film like Wanted behind, your expectations rise further. And after watching some good promos, I thought this film will be another path breaking one and this director is going to be the next Imtiaz Ali. So, let’s see if the film & the director can live up to the expectations.

Story/Script: The story of the film is ordinary. Extra Marital affair, struggle & romance as backdrop, this film could have been a message oriented film if scripted properly. The story, screenplay & dialogues are written by the director himself. Frankly, I don’t find think he should have taken up so many responsibilities. The first 10 minutes are so damn boring that you can actually think of walking off from the theatre. The film picks up but is still not up to the mark. Bad

Acting: The film is a Salman Khan starrer but it seems as if he did this film just to uplift his brother’s career. Salman Khan has a small role and has nothing to offer. His eyes look like he’s just got up from sleep, but his screen presence is still dominating. Kareena is good but she acts like Karisma. Sohail Khan is fine. Bappi Lahri has done a commendable job, Yash Tonk is ok. Priety Zinta is fine. Others have no scope. Wasted

Music: The music by Sajid Wajid is good, although I am not a fan of their music but I liked a few songs. But this time the way they are filmed and positioned in the film makes them bad. I wish they were better picturised, but would like to add that music is the only saving grace in the film. I like Don’t Say Alvida & Rabba. Average

Direction: When you don’t have a powerful script, half of your work as a director is affected. In this film the left over was destroyed by the director himself. The direction is poor; I think he got confused whether what he wants to show in the film. The subject was good, the casting was perfect and music was also good, all he needed was to focus. He tried to mix up two genres and the result is bad! This film can neither be called a Romantic nor a Drama. But, my gut feeling says that the director has potential and would come back strong. But for this time--à Poor

Overall, the film lacks soul; it’s painful to see Salman Khan getting wasted. The real culprit is the director who didn't have a solid script to build a film on.

My Rating: ** (Average)

Story/Script: *1/2

Acting: **1/2

Music: **1/2

Direction:* ½

I think the film would struggle at the Box Office because of the poor content and big competition from other films

Box Office Estimate: Flop/Average

Recommended for people who can watch the film without any expectations.
