Prakash Mehra- An Emotional Filmmaker

(Creator of Angry Young Man)

(1939-2009)

1973- This year must have been a remarkable one for the Bachchan who got his first solo hit in the form of Zanjeer, it rather became a SUPER HIT.....

Zanjeer (1973) was Amitabh Bachchan's 17th release in just four years of working. But, he couldn't give a single solo hit. The film established Amitabh Bachchan as the Angry Young Man. All this while there was one name who did wonders which none of the 13 directors (of the 16 films which Bachchan worked before) could do.

This person was Prakash Mehra. A Filmmaker....!!!

Born in Bijnore, Uttar Pradesh July 13, 1939, Prakash Mehra began as a production controller in the late 50s and made his debut at the age of 29 in 1969 as a director for the film "Haseena Maan Jayegi" which starred Shashi Kapoor, Babita, Ameeta and Johnny Walker. This was followed by a hit film "MELA" starring the late Feroz Khan and his brother Sanjay Khan. This was followed by another film. And, in 1973, Zanjeer became a Super Hit. Originally, Dev Anand was considered as the lead actor for Zanjeer, but Jaya Bachchan begged Prakash Mehra to give Amitabh Bachchan this film and rest is history.

They both gave 6 more films in the next 16 years and established Amitabh Bachchan as a leading actor and also Prakash Mehra as a leading Director & Producer of 70’s and 80’s.

Some other films of Prakash Mehra inlcude
Haath Ki Safai (1974)
Hera Pheri (1976)
Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978)
Laawaris (1981)
Namak Halaal (1982)
Sharaabi (1984)
Jaadugar (1989)
Zindagi Ek Jua (1992)
Dalaal (1993)
Bal Brahmachari (1996) [last film as a director]

Prakash Mehra was one of the first Bombay directors to try venture into Hollywood. In the late eighties he tried a joint venture to make a movie The God Connection with Frank Yandolino. The movie was to include Hollywood actors such as Charles Bronson among others, but the project though funded heavily initially, never materialized.

Prakash Mehra was a person who was emotionally connected to films and his family. His wife died after staying in coma for many years. In an interview, he stated that Amitabh Bachchan betrayed him. He stated that Amitabh Bachchan knew that Jaadugar (last film of Prakash and Amitabh) and Manmohan Desai’s Toofan were similar to each other and were being made at same time. Toofan released before Jaadugar and hence, Jaadugar became a big flop and ended the 7 film long journey which went on for 16 years.

Prakash Mehra was questioned once that has the industry been in touch with him. And his reply – “Our film industry is practical and professional, rather, shamelessly practical and professional. Pramod Chakraborty, Arjun Hingorani, Shakti Samanta and I were a group. We used to meet every day at Pramods place after work, and bounce off ideas. Its all scattered now. We have lost touch. Shakti has settled in Kolkata, Pramod is in the US. Those were the days...”

He met Amitabh Bachchan once after Jaadugar when he called him home for a film around 2000, the time when Bachchan made a comeback with KBC. Bachchan liked the idea but politely rejected it.

Amitabh was among the first ones to visit him. Mehra's health went into a decline after his wife fell into a coma that lasted a few years. Later after the death of his wife, the filmmaker's condition worsened. Mehra was also visited by Pakistani singer Adnan Sami, as the latter's father was admitted in the same hospital.

'I walked into Prakash ji's ICU to quietly take his blessings. But what do you know! He recognized me in that condition and did the popular hand movement from my song 'Lift kara de' with the Big B. It was his utterly endearing gesture of acknowledging me and my love for the movies that he did with the Big B,' – Adnan Sami

'Prakash Mehra, the director of some of my most significant and most successful films, lies in the ICU. When I went to him, he had difficulty in recognizing me. It is most depressing to see my contemporaries in this way. This wizard of a director, now lying inane and without response, eyes open but closed for all purposes, ventilator breathing for him - just so unimaginable,' Amitabh had posted after his visit on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com.

Prakash Mehra as said earlier was emotionally connected to his family and films so he could never give a big hit outside Amitabh Bachchan after he betrayed him. It is tragic that a person who got successful at a younger age had to see this as his ending.

Prakash Mehra died on 17th May 2009 after a prolong illness and multiple organ failure.

May his soul rest in peace

The Industry will always miss you.

Salman Khan: A Superstar

One of my very good friend Aadi (A very big fan of Salman) was upset that i didn't include Salman Khan's name in the list of best actors in a poll. So, as a prophecy i thought of writing an article on Salman Khan. This is dedicated to all Salman Khan fans and offcourse Aadi & Adeeb.

All my decisions are based on my instinct and some people think that I am too moody and cynical. But believe me I have been guided by my instincts and my heart all my life! I do not depend too much on intelligence, analysis and calculations… I believe in poet Adam who has said: “ Aakal har kaam ko zulum bana deti hai…”. Some meaning is lost in the translation-- that intelligence begets torture and torment and man is lost in deep thought and often feels ashamed of things that have never happened! (Taken it from Salman Khan's blog)

Very True...!!!
This so humble human being has been in the industry for more then 20 years.
He has given many hits
He has entertained us like no other.
He has helped so many people establish themselves in the industry.
He is none other than SALMAN KHAN.....!!!

Year by year, there has been a debate on whose the No. 1 among the three khans.
All three started at the same time.
Aamir Khan choose to work in selected projects, Shahrukh Khan restricted himself to the Chopra's and Johar's and more recently to his own banner.
They both were good actors and stardom followed.
Salman Khan was the man who always was made for stardom.
Offcourse, he is a good actor too. But, how many of his movies do you remember for its story? or for its directors? i guess not much....

Films of all three stars are sold on their star values. But, the films having Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan have a lot of other things like story, direction, music, etc. whereas, a movie with Salman in the lead is just remembered for Salman Khan(In most of the cases).

This is what a superstar is known as... Wherever Salman Khan goes, every fan of his goes crazy... I have seen people including a lot of my friends who go for watching his movies just for sake that he is starring in it....

But, i ask you people that can just one person make a film successful?
Film making is process which requires team work... But, this person has always hit the jackpot with his own star power. Some crappiest movies have also got big hits just because Salman Khan starred in those.

And, how can we forget his nature. He has helped everybody right from directors to actors to music directors and many more. And, he has been embedded in charity.

Such has the following of this star been that whenever the film in which he starred had director's name over his, the film flopped, Yuvvraaj being the best example. People say that he repeats his characters again and again. But, that is what makes him a star. People expect him to be like that.
He may not be as good as an actor like Aamir, nor is he good in Public Relations like Shahrukh or may not be as good as Akshay in martial arts. But, Salman Khan is still a SUPERSTAR...!!!

Just wish that 2009 brings him some more luck and get acting skills out of him, and offcourse Opening are meant to be great.. Upcoming films include Main aur Mrs Khanna(based on Extra Marital Affair), London Dreams (Musical Drama), Wanted (Action), Veer (Adventure).

P.S. This is written for Salman Khan fans and not to offend others. (Good points are taken into consideration).

Report based on research which includes his blog, a community called Bollywood Filmi Freak on Orkut, many more and offcourse personal observation over the past 4-5 years

That's all for now...!!!
Hope Aadi is happy now.... :-)

More later...

Take Care....!!!

I was given an assignment on research a few days ago. I choose this very hot topic of debate "Recession In Bollywood" (I don't like the name Bollywood, should call it indian cinema)

I feel failure of big films like Delhi 6, Chandni Chowk To China, Billu Barber has proved that the industry is hit by the recession.

So, after a lot of research, i have a conclusion....
It is not just the recession which is killing, but it is the stars who are killing.
Aamir Khan is the only star who is truely a thinking actor. Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan. All these people just want to work. Because they are good in this profession, they want to work in it. But, they need to understand that scripts should be the king. They should be thinking actors. They should think that what the audience wants, are we offering them that? Or are we just working for the sake of working.

Everytime you can't be lucky enough. The directors are getting a tough time nowadays. But, i feel writers are still the most underpaid people in the industry. They should be given an importance because today content is the king. And the content is provided by the producer, director, actor and writer, offcourse the process also includes many other people. But, these four are the primary people. So, why everytime writers are ignored?

And moreover, i feel the recent failure of films is also led by the debacle of Chandni Chowk To China, people had so high expectations and critics being too critical about the movie made it a flop. This was followed by many more beautifully made film like Luck By Chance, moderately well made Victory being flops as audience was disappointed by CCTC. Although, it was followed by the saviours Raaz 2, Dev D and Slumdog Millionaire (The only three successes so far). Delhi 6 was too bold for people in India. Billu lacked the touch the director usually gives.
Many more films released in between and lasted for a week and became flops and disasters.

Now, to ignite the fire more, the producer/multiplex issue has evolved.

But, the real thing is if the content will be good, audience will definitely come and watch films.
I should also get in another finding after my research that December was the best month for bollywood. It brought in Two biggest films Ghajini (All Time Blockbuster) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (Blockbuster). So, if good films are made, they are meant to work for sure.

Hoping that the industry will be enlightened again with hits and more than that good piece of cinema.

Take Care.
